2 - Food & Forage

Monday

Introduction - 10 minutes
This week we are going to focus on food and foraging. Foraging is defined as searching for food or provisions. Could you survive off the land? Do not attempt to eat anything if you are unsure of what it is. This class is not a license or certification to forage. 

​Car Camping - 20 minutes
​We'll watch the video below and discuss car camping. What should you bring car camping?
Car Camping Gear - 40 minutes
WITH A PARTNER: search online (DO NOT USE AMAZON) and make a presentation that includes the items from the list below. Each slide should include the BRAND name, a picture of the item, price, and where can you buy it. Make sure you have an introduction slide. Upload your slides to Classroom. You will have to make a copy for your partner so they can turn in their own in Classroom.

Tuesday 

Backcountry Camping Introduction - 20 minutes
We'll watch the video below then discuss. Backcountry camping is different than car camping. You don't have to starve though. What would you take with you and your camping partner? 
Backcountry Cooking Presentation - 45 minutes
DO NOT USE AMAZON. Make a presentation using Google Slides. You can find the link in Classroom. Don't forget to also upload your presentation to Classroom. There is no flipgrid required for this. Include the WEIGHT of the item, price, picture and link where you can buy it.

The person with the lightest gear and cheapest price wins a prize.

Wednesday

Meals-Ready-To-Eat - 100 minutes
​The US Army uses MREs in the field with a shelf life of 5-10 years. Today, we will be sampling and ranking the meals. Have you tried these before? You will take a selfie with the MRE and upload

Thursday

Backpacking Meal Prep Introduction - 20 minutes
​You will be planning meals for 3 days with your camping partner. The daily calorie intake for each of you should be at least 2,500 calories a day per person. What are you going to have for breakfast? What will last those 3 days? Do you plan something quick or are you going to cook it? 
Backpacking Meal Prep Research - 40 minutes
​With your camping partner, create a meal plan using the template in Google Classroom for 2,500 calories a person a day per person. You can only use 2 websites, https://www.citymarket.com/ or https://www.safeway.com/.  You may work with your camping partner but each must turn in their own Google Document. The food CANNOT be prepackaged meals that you just add hot water to. You CANNOT repeat meals. Granola and proteins bars are okay for snacks, but not for meals. . Upload your template to classroom.
Foraging in Colorado - 20 minutes
What can you forage in Colorado? Are there edible plants you can eat in a survival mode setting? Click on this link and check out the plants. See Google Classroom for a Google Document activity. You will complete this activity by yourself.
Oregon Trail - 15 minutes
We will be playing different versions of The Oregon Trail. Start with the classic version, then try the Travel version.
