We'll watch some map reading videos then go outside to work on our pace count. A contour map shows the high and low areas of geography. These maps are helpful when trying to imagine the terrain in ways that simple distances don’t represent well. But these maps can be complicated. We'll take a look at some maps and see the differences. Are all legends the same? What are the terrain features?

Ranger Beads - 30 minutes
Ranger Beads are used to track your pace count in the field. Watch the video below before we make these together. We will also make pace count beads also known as "ranger beads". You will take a picture of your ranger beads after you have completed the activity and upload it to Google Classroom.

Knuckles Topography - 20 minutes
You will take a picture of your hand after you have completed the activity and upload it to Google Classroom. We will be doing an activity on your hand/knuckles on topography.

Local Map Area - 70 minutes
We are going to look at 2 local maps in this lesson. One for Indian Peaks area and the other for Granby. Today, we'll use compasses and determine the azimuth, elevation, and distance of 2 different points I'll give you. Visit Google Classroom for the Google Document.

Orienteering - 100 minutes
We will be going outside and completing an orienteering activity using your compass and pace count. This is an individual activity to measure your compass abilities. The US Army will be joining us and assisting you throughout this process. I'll set up the course in the morning and have it ready to go for class! You'll be given different distances in meters and different degrees. You'll have to travel and find out if you're in the correct location!
